Animal House facility B.S.R.C. "Alexander Fleming"
The animal house unit of provides husbandry of animals and services to
the biomedical research community since early 2001. The present facility has
a capacity to house more than 18000 mice and comprises breeding colonies,
stock and experimental mice including many transgenic and knockout mouse
lines. Our animal house unit provides its services to the various research
groups of the B.S.R.C. "Al.Fleming" as well as to external contractors
in Europe and U.S.A. (pharmaceutical
and biotechnology companies, leading hospitals, and academic institutions).

2. Transgenic facility

The Facility generates transgenic mice via:
• Pronuclear Injection-Founder Generation
• Embryonic Stem Cell Gene Targeting-Blastocyst Injection-Chimera Production-
Germline transmission
In addition the facility facilitates the transportation, storage and
archiving of mutant strains, via embryo rederivation, and cryopreservation
and recovery of mouse embryo and sperm.
The Facility benefits from the research environment of BSRC “Al.Fleming” to
provide an excellent service in transgenic technologies. The Facility had a track
record of successful projects with
investigators within the BSRC Al. Fleming, collaborating academic
institutions in Greece, Europe and USA, and
biotech/pharmaceutical companies within Europe.

3. Macromolecular Analysis

Laboratory of Macromolecular Analysis

"Alexander Fleming"
The Laboratory of macromolecular analysis
provides a core facility for the analysis and characterization of proteins
and their interactions with other biomolecules. A strong emphasis has been
given on the acquisition of state-of-the-art specialized instruments. A
modern ion-trap mass spectrometer is available (Finnigan LCQ-DECA), providing
high sensitivity and accuracy. Apart from the standard electrospray source,
we have obtained a nanospray source, which is essential for the analysis of
peptides at the low levels obtained from 2-D gels. Peptides are separated with
a specialized nano-HPLC system (LC Packings UltiMate), using flow rates at
the nanoliter range and very small diameter columns. All the necessary
equipment for reproducible 2-D gels are available. A major instrument of the
facility is a Surface Plasmon Resonance biosensor (BIAcore 3000) for the
analysis of macromolecular interactions, an area where our group has
extensive experience. An analytical HPLC system, as well as two FPLC systems
for protein purification are also available.

4. Flow Cytometry

Flow Cytometry facility B.S.R.C. "Alexander
Fleming"
The Flow Cytometry Facility at BSRC’s Institute of Immunology provides
investigators with support for flow cytometric analysis and operator-based
cell sorting. The facility is equipped with flow cytometric analyzers capable
for up to 8-colour analysis and high-throughput applications as well as a
cell-sorting unit. Its personnel offers maintenance of the instruments,
assistance on instrument usage, experimental design depending upon the
researcher's knowledge and requirements, experimental troubleshooting and
running of cell sorting experiments.

5. Expression Profiling

Expression Profiling Unit B.S.R.C.
"Alexander Fleming"
The Expression Profiling Unit provides
researchers with support in genome based research. Unit services are offered
not only to academic and research centers, but the private sector as well, in
the context of academic collaborations, participation in research networks
and/or contracted services.
The
Unit is equipped with the most advanced technology on microarray
experimentation, including the use of an Affymetrix Scanner for
high-throughput microarray experiments as well as all the equipment necessary
for the generation of good quality results. A cDNA confocal scanner is also
available for imaging and data analysis and a Luminex system for multiplex
cytokine experiments. A complete and thorough data analysis is also conducted
in order to generate and support customers with ready to publish results.

BioIT unit is concerned with data acquisition and integration from wet
lab scientists both inside and outside the institute. Unit members focus on
building, maintaining and providing biological databases and information
services for the research community. Excellency of data curation and
appliance of cutting edge technology have placed the unit in the centre of
recent developments in the field of biological resources.
